Emmanuel Charpentier was born in 1968 and is currently the director of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Infection and a visiting professor at Umeå University in Sweden. In 2011, Doudna began to cooperate with Charpentier to develop CRISPR technology. A year later, the two female biologists published a paper in the journal Science laying the foundation for the development of the CRISPR-Cas9 system. This allowed significant improvement in the efficiency of gene editing by cutting DNA at a “point-to-point” in vitro experiment.
